What is Kei Club?
Kei Clubis a new kawaii culture printed magazine launching this spring. The magazine focuses on kawaii lifestyle, Japanese fashion. intersectional feminism, and last but not least, memes. Issues of Kei Club magazine are to be released seasonally every 3 months. The magazine is self-published and approximately 36 pages long.
Kei Club is founded by two fellow Houstonians: Kit and Callie. Kit is the owner of the accessories indie brand Otome Neko and Callie is the owner of the indie fashion brand Ota-Q Apparel. Both Kit and Callie are active members of the Texas kawaii community, so I’m happy for them to launch this project! I asked both of them how the idea of the magazine came to be.
The Founder’s Concept
Callie: The idea of making a magazine has always been a dream of hers. I’m more about inspiring and encouraging people and think a physical magazine is a great way to promote that!
Kit: Working on a magazine has always been a dream of mine. I grew up a huge fan of print media, especially magazines. I would cut out pictures and articles and paste them into a scrapbook, which was my prized possession for a long time! As I grew older and discovered Japanese fashion, I was constantly on the hunt for cute magazines like KERA, Gothic &Lolita Bible and Shojou Beat (RIP). I always thought it was unfortunate that most of the J-fashion magazines were not translated to English, and that there was no push for an English-based publication. With the growth of the online community, tons of information was being put out there. Tips, tutorials, people speaking out about issues in the community, and a ton of creativity. I wanted to have a place where these could be gathered and used as future resources. A magazine seemed like the best way to do that! I had mentioned my desire to start a magazine to Callie in early 2017, but it wasn’t until 2018 that we really kicked it into overdrive and decided to follow our dreams! I couldn’t ask for a better partner to be doing this with, and I can’t wait to show Kei Club to the world!
